A season with Agogo

Unjiika Little Growers: A Season with Agogo is a 70-page colouring and learning book for children aged 4–8.

Across thirty single-sided illustrated scenes, children encounter the practical work behind a growing season: preparing soil, understanding water and weather, planting maize, groundnuts, beans, carrots and garlic, caring for chickens and goats, harvesting, sorting, weighing produce and taking it to market.

The story moves between Chongwe and Lusaka and presents farming, family life and learning as part of contemporary Zambia.

Lifting Carrots
Agogo loosens the soil. Tiwonge lifts a carrot.

The story behind the book

The story behind the book

Agogo Maqala is my real grandmother.

The book grew from memories of being with her, from the farm life she cherished, and from the way knowledge is passed through family; by watching, participating, asking questions and doing things together.

She turned 91 in August 2026.

The younger characters draw on family life across generations, while Agogo remains at the centre of the season: observing, teaching and working alongside her great-grandchildren.

Unjiika means to gather, bring together or compile.

That meaning runs through the book. Gathering people, knowledge, work and the different parts of a season.

Agogo Maqala’s first reaction to her story

Her first words when she saw the book were: “I am very proud of you.”
